Services

We are available to serve your students for the 2023-2024 school year for virtual services across the state of California and the nation and available for in-person services in Southern California.

We are a California Department of Education approved NPA provider for Services from a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility, and Braille Transcription. Below are the services we are able to provide.

Services from a Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired (TVI/CTVI)

Direct services include braille instruction, training in the use of braille note taking devices, services and supports in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), and training for the students and staff on the utilization of assistive technology.

Orientation and Mobility (O&M Specialists/COMS)

Orientation and Mobility Specialists who are able to work with students who are blind or visually impaired on a variety of skills that encompass safe and effective travel needs across home, school, and community settings and with an ultimate goal of independence for the student.

Braille Transcription

We provide literary braille transcription in Unified English Braille (UEB) and Nemeth Code.

For the 2025–2026 School Year
In accordance with the provisions of a Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators, Braille Abilities is currently seeking qualified candidates for the following hard-to-staff positions:

Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist

Due to a statewide shortage of educators holding a valid California Education Specialist Credential in Visual Impairments, this position may be filled under emergency permit or intern credential pathways, as authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

Interest in or eligibility for enrollment in an approved VI Education Specialist or O&M credential program (e.g., Cal State LA or San Francisco State)

Commitment to complete CTC requirements toward full credential authorization

Ability to work collaboratively and support students with visual impairments in diverse educational settings

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with individuals who have visual impairments

Enrollment or acceptance into a CTC-approved university program for Visual Impairment or O&M (Intern pathway)

Basic proficiency in Braille (or willingness to learn)

Bilingual preferred (not required)

Credential Pathway Support:
Our district is committed to supporting candidates through the credentialing process. We proudly collaborate with California State University, Los Angeles and San Francisco State University, both of which offer Commission-approved credential programs in Visual Impairment.
